This post could have been made a bunch of times, but for some reason I didn’t really notice it until Tim Seeley drew her in this issue. So Laurie, also known as Transonic is a new mutant who Hope helped with her crazy mutant powers and this and that, and apparently in the Marvel universe being blue means you’re not naked. Even if you’re not wearing any clothes. So I guess I’m not so much complaining about her costume as her not having a costume. The realism of the art combined with the blatantly nakedness combined with the lack of any genitalia is pretty unsettling.
It’s a little bit like Mystique in the movie, she figures being blue totally cancels out not wearing any clothes, but they had the good sense to detail her with scales and ridges and all sorts of bumpy bits to at least visually cover her up a little bit. She’s still totally naked, but it’s less blatantly naked, the bare skin is more hidden.
I’m still not a huge fan of Mystique being naked in the movies but at least she can have the excuse of being a shapeshifter and clothes not shapeshifting with her and stuff, but as far as I know, Transonic doesn’t have the same reasoning. Or external genitalia.
Or internal genitalia for that matter. It’s about to get wildly inappropriate in here!
So uh yeah this is really unfortunate and I wish I could imagine the diamond on her chest meant that everything else was cloth or something, but it’s totally not. So no nipples, no labia, no vagina, nothing like that, did she lose her reproductive organs and mammary glands as part of her mutation? Why can’t she just wear at least some pants? I like Generation Hope so far and I like how pratical Hope’s outfit has always been and Idie’s does a nice job of visualising the hot and cold of her powers, and Transonic is just blue and creepy and naked with pink hair.
As has been pointed out to me, and I’m ashamed I forgot, Alan Moore covered this naked as a costume thing way back in Top 10, and did an excellent job of it. Top 10 was awesome, if you haven’t read it and like police superheroes, you should give it a shot!
